Since the beginning of the year, one topic has dominated nearly every strategic discussion I’ve been part of: the impact of AI on services. From boardrooms to market reports, the conversation is everywhere. The big consulting firms are publishing surveys with executive feedback, and yet, one central theme remains: AI is going to change how we work. That much is certain. But the real questions are—how, how much, and how fast?
Let’s start with how it will change things.
We already know AI is accelerating workflows and introducing new tools into our day-to-day. From ChatGPT and Gemini to industry-specific solutions like Cursor, AI is becoming part of our reality. And beyond that, the rise of autonomous agents capable of automating tasks—and even decision-making—is reshaping how services are delivered.
Now, how much will services change?
Opinions vary. Some predict rapid replacement of roles like software and data engineers, arguing that AI will take over entirely. Others believe AI will handle routine tasks, empowering engineers to focus on what truly matters. I lean toward the second view. AI won’t eliminate demand—it will amplify it. The ability to deliver more, with less cost and greater impact, will fuel even more demand for data services.
A Data Perspective
Let’s zoom in on the data world, where I’ve spent the last several years building Indicium.
When we started, we followed traditional data workflows. But by 2019, we realized they weren’t enough. We needed to be faster and better. That’s when we embraced the Modern Data Stack (MDS)—using tools like dbt to reimagine the data development process.
This shift was transformative. MDS brought business and tech closer together, allowing for faster delivery and better quality. Today, some of the world’s leading companies—Apple, Salesforce, Netflix, Spotify, Novo Nordisk—have adopted some form of this approach.
But even with MDS, challenges remain. Businesses change fast, and data workloads still struggle to keep pace. While ROI has improved, it still requires careful planning and solid processes to be truly effective.
That’s where AI comes in.
My belief is that AI, combined with MDS, will finally get us where we need to be: where business and data teams operate at the same speed, delivering faster, more valuable outcomes.
What I Expect to See
Here’s what I believe AI will bring to data services:
- Faster delivery with lower costs
- Higher ROI on data projects
- Greater demand for data initiatives, not less
- Closer alignment between business and data teams
- A new wave of opportunities, driven by productivity gains
Engineers won’t be replaced—they’ll be empowered. By offloading routine work to AI, they can focus on higher-impact areas. And because ROI will rise, the appetite for data will grow. We’re not looking at less work—we’re looking at a surge of new possibilities.
How Fast Will This Happen?
Faster than most expect.
The benefits are too compelling for companies to ignore. But adoption won’t be seamless. There’s a steep learning curve, and the market will need time to adjust. It’s not just about using AI—it’s about having the right people and the right processes in place.
At Indicium, we believe we’re entering a new phase, just like we did when MDS emerged. We’re already evolving our processes to embed AI into our standard delivery model—training our professionals, integrating AI agents, and creating a new, repeatable methodology to scale results for our clients.
Just as MDS revolutionized data, I believe this next step—AI-powered data services—will be the next major leap forward.
Exciting times are ahead. And we’re ready for what’s coming.
